„I never want to be called a women’s rights activist – I am a feminist!”

The Gentle Rebel tells the inspiring story of Marlies Krämer, a woman who has been fighting determinedly against patriarchal structures for decades. In 1990, she refused to sign her new documents because the signature field only contained the male form “Inhaber” (holder, masculine). Thanks to her nationwide petition campaign, the female form “Inhaberin” (holder, feminine) was finally officially recognized.

Even at the age of 84, Marlies Krämer continues her fight – this time against the banking system, demanding that her bank, the Sparkasse, recognize her as a “Kundin” (female customer) instead of “Kunde” (male customer).

This symbolic fight for gender equality was captured in a documentary co-produced with SR (Saarländischer Rundfunk). Its broadcast on ARD and availability in the ARD Mediathek brought Marlies Krämer’s story to a wide audience. Even though the documentary is no longer available in the Mediathek, its impact remains strong, continuing to inspire many to fight for their rights.
